Welcome to New Care Farms

In 1981 our parents, Pieter & Maria Biemond, immigrated from Holland and began farming here in Iroquois. They started with a conventional, 140acre property and a traditional free-stall barn.  By 1989 they had decided that transitioning to organic farming was a healthier option for their family. They began with the land and by 1998 were fully certified for the crops and in 1999 they started shipping the milk into the organic market.

In 1995 a fire destroyed the barn, but most of the cattle survived. They decided at this point, it was time to update the farm and put up a green-house style barn with a deep bedding pack and milking parlour.

We, Josh & Ellen and Rudi & Jennifer, returned to the farm in 2005 & 2011 respectively.  In 2011, we purchased the farm from our parents and took over all the primary roles and responsibilities of maintaining the farm.

At the time of succession, we knew the farm could sustain 3 families, but not long-term and not without its struggles, so we began to talk about what we could do to improve the profitability and sustainability of the farm.  Our parents had always dreamed of making their own cheese, so we looked into that as an option for an added-value project, but yogurt just seemed to make more sense.  We picked up a pencil and paper and started drawing. 2 years later, Upper Canada Creamery opened its doors.
